Mark Shapiro, MD


Mark Shapiro, MD is a practicing Hospitalist & is the creator, producer & host of Explore The Space Podcast, a show focused on bringing those who provide healthcare and those who seek healthcare closer together through conversations with leaders from across the spectrum. He is also an accomplished public speaker, delivering a Keynote Address at the 2022 Society of Hospital Medicine Annual Meeting and a TEDx Talk in March 2021.

Dr. Shapiro is a sought-after national speaker, subjects of interest include the gun violence epidemic, gender equity, climate change and disaster management as well as advocacy and voter registration. He is also a successful producer of live shows and roundtable events and is a well-known panel moderator on a wide variety of topics. Additionally, Dr. Shapiro serves at Lead Clinical Faculty for Hospital Medicine with the Clinician Experience Project. In this role, he creates unique app-based content for individual and team-based improvement, as well as multiple public speaking roles.

Dr. Shapiro is also a published author, most recently co-authoring “Preventing Gun Violence: Catalyzing Action” in the Journal of Hospital Medicine. He is also a co-author of the “Covid-19 CV Matrix” published in the Journal of Hospital Medicine and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. He was also the winner of the “I Stand With Her” Award at the 2021 Women in Medicine Summit.

Dr. Shapiro has been in full-time clinical practice as a Hospitalist since 2006 and has been working with Providence Medical Group-Northern California since 2016. Since joining the medical group, he has served as both Hospitalist Medical Director and member of the Board of Directors. He earned a BA in history at University of California-Los Angeles, attended medical school at Baylor College of Medicine and completed his Internal Medicine residency at University of California-San Diego.
